The Origins
Established initially in the last decades of the 19th century, Rimorchiatori Napoletani (RN) was born to meet the requirements of loading and discharging of goods and passengers from sailing ships first and of towing, assistance and salvage when the steam navigation was stably introduced in the port of Naples.
At dawn the RN activity can be identified with the first timid steps of a rudimentary organisation of port services. The port of Naples is conformed, by its natural shape, in such a way as to offer a very good place of safety in case of emergency but the south-west winds can be particularly violent, making all manoeuvres in port sometimes very difficult.
The first legal official act of RN dates back to 1917, when a solicitor act was registered to form the first unlimited partnership company among some private citizens, common owners of some small steam-tugs. The company started activity fronting the more increasing traffic volume in the port of Naples (mainly big passenger-ships), only by employing the above-mentioned tugs.
